- Instead of candy, hand out other treats (or toys): granola bars; snack packs such as trail mix, raisins, crackers, or pretzels; 100% juice boxes; non-candy Halloween treats such as stickers, bookmarks, tattoos, erasers, and pencils (to save money, look for these on-line or at dollar stores or warehouse stores).
- Eat a nutritious meal before going trick-or-treating. If you eat after going out, children are likely to only want to eat candy for supper.
- Keep candy out of reach to prevent continuous and mindless eating of candy.
- Eat a piece of candy with milk, apple slices, or whole-grain crackers to add some healthy nutrients.
